Through the Port of Baltimore flow vast quantities of commodities, both in number and in weight, crucial to our daily lives. One of the most significant, because of its many applications within our culture, is sodium metabisulfite. It is an inorganic compound composed of sodium, sulfur, and oxygen, with widespread industrial and commercial applications. Although not a household name, it is well worth learning about.
The Main Manufacturer
Esseco Group manufactures sodium metabisulfite overseas and ships it to the US. A subsidiary, Esseco USA LLC, markets and distributes the product within the United States. Headquartered in the United States, it operates as the North American subsidiary of the Italian-based Esseco Group. It was formed in 2003 as a joint venture between Esseco Srl and General Chemical. At the time, General Chemical was one of the leading manufacturers of sulfur dioxide derivatives in America and Esseco Srl was one of the leading producers in Europe. Esseco USA distributes sulfur dioxide derivatives and other chemical products throughout North America, playing a vital role in connecting European chemical producers with U.S. consumers and industries.
Esseco USA distributes two primary grades of sodium metabisulfite: Technical Grade and NF/Food and Photo Grade. The Technical Grade variety is used to remove dissolved oxygen and excess chlorine from wastewater, to initiate chemical reactions, to reduce chrome and other metals, to neutralize cyanide residues from mining, and as a reducing agent in dyes. The NF/Food and Photo Grade serves similar chemical functions but is also used as a preservative, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and leavening agent in the food industry. It further supports applications in animal feed and certain pharmaceuticals.
All of the shipments that entered the Port of Baltimore in 2024 originated from Genoa, Italy, and were carried primarily by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) vessels—most notably the MSC TORONTO and MSC EVEREST VIII. Based on import quantities, the Port of Baltimore received an average of 1,154 tons of sodium metabisulfite per month in 2024. Among the 151 shipments, 101 were consigned to Esseco USA, while 50 went to Savino Del Bene USA, Inc.

According to Import Info data, the Port of Baltimore ranked first in the United States for sodium metabisulfite imports in 2024, leading both in the number of shipments received and in total weight. The port handled 151 shipments that year, compared to 75 at the Port of Newark, 26 at Houston, 22 at Charleston, and 19 at Norfolk. Nationwide, the U.S. received 352 total shipments of sodium metabisulfite in 2024, amounting to approximately 53 million pounds (24,115 short tons). Of this volume, Baltimore accounted for about 30 million pounds (13,855 short tons), or roughly 54% of the national total. This dominance underscores the port's exceptional specialization in handling bulk chemical commodities.
Sodium metabisulfite exemplifies how a specialized industrial chemical can serve multiple sectors—from water treatment and mining to food preservation and pharmaceuticals—while revealing the Port of Baltimore’s growing importance as a national hub for chemical imports. Baltimore’s dominance in this category reinforces its broader role within the Greater Baltimore intermodal ecosystem and highlights its strategic value in the national logistics network.
